I was shocked to see the front page headline in this week’s Courier:
“Fairy Bridge Site Not Important says MNH”
And I say, What Nonsense. To me it is one of the most important sites on the Island.it is world famous and attracts tourists in their droves. It matters not that some say “Ah, but it is not the original fairy bridge.” What does matter is the fact that this is the one that attracts all the attention, the myths and legends that have accumulated over the years bear testimony to its authenticity. Celebrities and world class TT motorcyclists have often been photographed there wishing for luck.
The practice of pinning wishes to the surrounding trees is quite new and concerns me. Apart from littering the site, it endangers those who go to great lengths to attach their messages to the foliage. It was with this in mind that I proposed placing a “Fairy Letterbox” next to the bridge. Messages could be collected on a regular basis and in some instances, a reply from the “little people” could be sent to the writer. I even offered to take on the job. The proposal was considered as a hazard to the traffic on a very busy main road – but people are constantly stopping there anyhow, so why not create a lay-by for them?
Manx National Heritage – wake up to a golden opportunity and encourage the development as proposed in this week’s Courier.
If you feel as strongly as I do about this, contact your MHK and let there be;
“Power to the Little People.”
