Mandate is at the very heart of Manx Radio’s news and current affairs coverage.

With three editions each weekday, the programme sets the Island’s news agenda first thing and then follows all the main stories, on and off the Isle of Man, throughout the day, adding detail and background to the hourly bulletins.

Mandate AM – 07:30 to 08:30

More people on the Isle of Man start their day with this news programme than any other on the radio. John Moss is the regular host and as one of our most experienced journalists, he skilfully navigates through the burning issues of the day.

Mandate at One – 13:00 to 13:15

A comprehensive round up of news, sport and business, this fifteen-minute digest will bring you right up to date with national and international issues.

Mandate PM – 17:30 to 18:00

Rounds off the working day with a full update on all the main stories including details of how the major financial markets have fared and a look ahead to any sporting action coming up.

The three Mandates are the most listened to, the best known and the most trusted news and current affairs programmes on the Isle of Man. For the latest news from Manx Radio click here

Ballaneven. How a lot of rot is proving a winner!

Composting in BallanevenHow “self contained” could this Island get, if we cut our ties with “across” and went for it?.

What we could achieve?.  There are some areas where you can glimpse what is possible. On the hillside above Tynwald Mills is an endeavour called “Ballaneven”. Here directors Martin Birchenough and John Kneen produce from green waste, compost of great quality, mulch and topsoil.

Martin, who is also a serving police officer, and John set up the facility some four years ago. Now, serried ranks of the material in varying states of production fill the site. Machinery shreds, chomps and grinds it up.

The Environment Minister in Tynwald noted how much of the compost which is spread on Manx gardens comes from “across” and how he bemoans the fact. At Ballaneven (the name incidentally comes probably from the name Kneen) they take from the North and West but admit they have the capability to take from all over the Island.

What they do produce, and I am but an amateur gardener, is lovely stuff. Even the top soil produced has compost in its makeup.

This is a demonstration of what the Manx can do for themselves. They do need political help, for Tynwald Court to look for opportunities to help the Isle of Man become, as much as possible, self sufficient.
