100 new general gaol cases heard in 2023

121 defendants involved in the criminal proceedings

One hundred new criminal cases were heard at the Court of General Gaol Delivery last year.

Figures released in the Isle of Man Courts and Tribunals Service annual report show they involved 121 defendants.

It’s the second highest number of defendants in the last six years topped only by 2020 when there were 126.

The Court of General Gaol Delivery is broadly equivalent to the England and Wales Crown Court and deals with the most serious of crimes where individuals can be sentenced to long periods of custody.

In the summary criminal courts there were 2206 appearances by defendants in 2023 who appeared in front of magistrates, the deputy high bailiff and high bailiff or at the juvenile courts.

It's the lowest number in five years.
