20mph limits, more crossings and traffic calming proposed for Douglas Central

Living Roads Scheme seeks to make area more active travel friendly

Roads around Ballakermeen High School could have more pedestrian crossings, traffic calming measures and one-way systems in a bid to reduce motorists using the area as a cut through.

It's part of a scheme to support residents in the area who want to walk or cycle to and from work or school.

The Department of Infrastructure has published a number of ideas as part of the Living Streets Scheme in Douglas Central.

It comes after petitions from local residents raising issues such as challenges crossing the road, poor visibility at junctions and narrow pavements.

The proposals include bringing in traffic calming measures at Alexander Drive and Mount Bradda, as well as 20mph zones throughout the area.

Zebra-like crossings near junctions at side roads off Alexander Drive, Devonshire Road and Ballabrooie Way are also suggested, along with a Toucan crossing on Peel Road, and a traffic free zone on Ballakermeen Drive.

The scheme wants to change traffic flow in the area to stop non-essential traffic from using the area as a shortcut, which would see the introduction of one-way and no entry restrictions.

Some of the no entry measures would allow residents to drive in two directions, but stop those who don't live nearby using the area as a cut through.

Changes to traffic flow are put forward for a number of routes, including Selbourne Road, Devonshire Road and Primrose Avenue.

Views from the public are being sought on the proposals, with a consultation open until 12 June.

You can find details of all the plans and submit your response to the consultation through the government's website.
