40% of flats inspected by firefighters fail safety inspection

Fire and Rescue Service raise concern at non-compliance with regulations

Almost 40 per cent of flats on the Isle of Man, inspected by fire safety inspectors in the second quarter of this year, failed their initial inspections.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service says it wants to raise awareness of the dangers of poor fire safety in flats.

Landlords, management companies and occupiers are being reminded of the legal requirement to ensure the properties, and the people living in them, are safe.

The Fire Precautions (Houses in Multiple Occupation and Flats) Regulations 2016 make it a legal requirement for all flats to meet specific safety requirements.

Earlier this month a Ramsey woman was fined £9,000 for failing to comply with regulations.

Station Officer Gareth Gawne is head of the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service’s Flats Team.

He said: "We’re concerned at the number of flats we’re inspecting that are non-compliant.

"We appreciate it's a scale, and some of these issues may be fairly minor and easily resolved, but we’re also seeing major issues which could prevent occupants from escaping in the event of a fire.

"We are working hard to ensure these issues are tackled and people remain safe in their homes."
