Additional protection for Manx fishing grounds

Bottom trawling prohibited within areas of Western Irish Sea mud belt

Enhanced protection is being provided to three important fishing sites around the Island.

The new measures, announced by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture prohibit bottom trawling within three sectors of the Western Irish Sea mud belt.

It's a large expanse of muddy habitat off the west coast that's home to a wide range of marine species, including langoustines.

Also, under a new quota arrangement with the UK, a number of Manx boats will now be able to fish for langoustines using environmentally friendly creels.
