27-year-old admits driving without due care or consideration
An Andreas man has admitted driving without due care or consideration after hitting a mother and her child when his trailer ‘jack-knifed’.
David Ronald Atherton, of Kiondroghad Road, appeared at Douglas Courthouse where he pleaded guilty to causing serious bodily harm on 15 June.
The 27-year-old was driving a Toyota Hilux Invincible on Johnny Watterson’s Lane, at around 11.30am, when he clipped the kerb.
It caused the trailer he was towing to mount the pavement and strike the female pedestrian and her 11-month-old baby.
The court heard the woman spent 16 days in hospital after suffering serious injuries including multiple fractures to her pelvis, lacerations and chipped teeth.
She has no recollection of what happened; her daughter was uninjured.
Atherton was arrested and told police he had been driving at between 25 and 30mph at the time adding: “Until I actually stopped, I didn’t realise I’d hit her.”
A decision on which court Atherton will be sentenced in will be made on 22 August; the case has been adjourned to that date.
