Anglers warned to be on alert for invasive fish

Inland Fisheries are monitoring the situation

Anglers are being warned to be on the alert for potential sightings of the invasive, non-native Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, also known as pacific or humpbacked salmon).

They are clearly identifiable from their Atlantic salmon counterparts – particularly when mature and in spawning condition.

They can be identified by their characteristic black mouths, large round, dark spots on their tails and a prominent hump on male salmon in season.

They could be found around the Island during the late July, August and September period this year.

A single Pink Salmon was captured in 2021 and it is likely that they may appear on our shores this year due to their biannual spawning cycle.

If caught, anglers are asked to dispatch it not release it.

For monitoring purposes, freeze the salmon and contact DEFA Fisheries for collection.

If you are unsure, take a photo of the identifiable features (mouth, tail, entire fish) and release the fish to protect Atlantic Salmon populations. Send your photos into DEFA Fisheries at FisheriesEnquiries.DEFA@gov.im

All captures should be reported to DEFA Fisheries and this information will be collated by Fisheries Management and shared with all relevant Agencies.
