Annual economic report meets resistance from southern MHKs

Follows vow to vote against next month's Budget

Government's 'Our Island Plan: Economic Strategy Annual Report', led to an hour and a half of debate in the Tynwald chamber yesterday (16 December).

As the report had not been on the register of business for the required 6 weeks, it first needed to be agreed by members that they were willing for it to be taken at the January sitting.

This vote saw all of Legislative Council agree, along with 17 Members of the House of Keys.

However, seven voted against - Ann Corlett, David Ashford, Joney Faragher - and all four southern MHKs - Tim Glover, Michelle Haywood, Jason Moorhouse and Juan Watterson.

It follows recent vows from the southern contingency that they won't back next month's Budget after the potential closure of the Southern Swimming Pool was announced:

In response to the lengthy debate, Chief Minister Alfred Cannan said Tynwald was at risk of falling victim to political 'paralysis by analysis’:

In the end, the report was received by the court, with all LegCo members voting for it, alongside 17 MHKs.

This time, six MHK's made their dissent known - and interestingly, two of those six had switched sides.

Douglas South's Claire Christian and Douglas Central's Chris Thomas joined ranks with the crop of four southern MHKs, who stuck to their guns in questioning the government's economic decisions.
