Ban for driver who injured passengers after crashing into verge

20-year-old sentenced for driving without due care

A Douglas man has been banned from the road for a year after crashing his car and seriously injuring one of his passengers.

Corwyn Cannan, of Railway Terrace, lost control of his VW Golf on the bend on East Foxdale Road on 20 July.

It veered into a field and collided with a verge just after 11pm – three passengers who were wearing seatbelts suffered minor injuries; a fourth, who wasn’t, fractured his spine.

The 20-year-old later admitted to causing serious bodily harm by driving without due care and consideration.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse Cannan’s advocate told the court it was an ‘unfamiliar stretch of road’ adding: "This must be put down to relative inexperience on the roads."

Fining Cannan £1250, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £500, High Bailiff James Brooks told him: "It does appear to be a momentary lapse of concentration. This was a one-off error."

Cannan will remain banned until he’s taken and passed an extended driving test; he’ll also have to keep his R-plates on for an additional two years.
