Ben responds to distress call

Difficulty for leisure craft in bad weather

The Ben-my-Chree had to respond to a distress call from a leisure craft this afternoon.

She provided a lee for the Alise - which left Douglas for the Lancashire coast on Wednesday night - and sheltered the yacht after it issued a pan-pan.

It meant there was no immediate danger to anyone's life, but that urgency was required.

The captain on board the Heysham-bound Steam Packet sailing assumed the role of on-scene commander.

It's understood the yacht, which had one person on board, got into difficulties in the blustery conditions.

Communications were initially poor between the sole person aboard and the Holyhead coastguard after it issued the distress call.

It was soon spotted by the captain on the Ben-my-Chree, who came to its assistance.

A lifeboat was then called to assist and tow the yacht into Fleetwood.
