Big Spud competition bursts into life

Seed potato hand-out takes place

TT 2018 isn't the only fast-paced, edge-of-the seat, mass participation event to be officially launched today.

The Cronk y Voddy Ploughing Society Big Spud competition takes root this evening (Thurs 22) with the distribution of the official seed potatoes.

The traditional event has run for many decades and enjoys mythical status in the Manx countryside, with many followers and even a poem being written about it.

Competitors have just six months to grow the heaviest crop possible in a tub from single tuber before the big weigh-in at September's Flower and Produce Show.

This evening's seed spud hand-out and a slide show from Ray Kelly takes place at the Tynwald Inn, St Johns from 7.30 for 8pm start and is free of charge.

All proceeds raised from the competition will go to the society's nominated charity for 2018, Bridge the Gap.
