Changes to MEDs from next week

Overnight closure because of reduction in demand

A reduction in demand and recent staffing issues means there'll be a change to the Manx Emergency Doctors Service - or MEDs - from next week, but there's some good news for those people who struggle to get on-the-day appointments at their GP surgery.

From Monday MEDs will close between midnight and 8am during the week for an initial period of 12 weeks, taking it up to 31 March.

The advice for those needing emergency care during the small hours is to call 999 or go directly to the Emergency Department at Noble's Hospital.

Manx Care says on weekdays between midnight and 8am, there will be an on-call GP available to support the Isle of Man Ambulance Service and Hospice if needed.

From mid-January there will be a locum GP available during the day, who will provide more capacity for on-the-day appointments that cannot be accommodated within a patient’s own GP practice.

Each practice will be able to allocate a number of additional appointments on the day, which will be offered from a surgery in Douglas.

Here the full interview about the changes here.
