Community service for man who breached domestic abuse order within a week

41-year-old had been banned from contacting woman he punched

A Douglas man has been ordered to carry out unpaid work after breaching the terms of an agreement which banned him from contacting his former partner.

Alan Christopher O’Reilly, of Ballafletcher Road, was handed the Domestic Abuse Protection Order at Douglas Courthouse on 7 November.

The 41-year-old had punched the woman in the face, kicked her and threatened to harm her - and her friends and family - between April and July this year.

However on 14 November he sent his former partner a series of messages on WhatsApp apologising and telling her: “Just want you to know, I love you” and “I love you and miss you so much”.

When O’Reilly was arrested he told police officers: “I knew this was going to happen.”

During sentencing for the breach O’Reilly’s advocate told the court the ‘four little messages’ were like something from ‘Mills and Boon’ adding: “There were affectionate messages and nothing sinister.

“He does apologise for this lapse – for his error of judgement,” the advocate added.

Ordering O’Reilly to carry out 160 hours of community service, and pay prosecution costs of £125, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told him: “The messages themselves I consider to be really quite manipulative.”
