Crookall: 'No Roundhouse inquiry at this time'

Follows 'well documented issues' at Braddan site

The Department of Infrastructure has ruled out holding an inquiry into the new £10 million community centre in Braddan.

Tim Crookall was asked, by Onchan MHK Rob Callister, whether his department would look into issues at The Roundhouse. 

Legislation states concerned government departments have the authority to launch an investigation into how a local authority performs its duties.

In response Mr Crookall said his department doesn't use this power on a regular basis.

He adds: "The department understands that the situation is that Braddan Commissioners, a separate legal entity, and their elected representatives, have made decisions in regard to the building of a community centre at the Strang, called the Roundhouse. 

"There has unfortunately been a number of delays to the official opening of the building and well documented issues with access to the building. 

"This building project has been paid for through two loans obtained through the Local Government Borrowing Scheme. 

"Recently the commissioners have significantly increased their rates to pay the loan payments for this as well as other associated costs." 

Mr Crookall also pointed out that the laws allow the department to seek information such as reports and returns as may, from time to time, be required by the relevant department or by Tynwald.

He says he is only aware of one inquiry held in accordance with the Local Government Act in the past 20 years which was an inquiry into Port St Mary Commissioners in 2004.
