DEC planning own teacher survey

Staff to give views on range of issues

Education bosses are planning to conduct their own survey into the happiness of Island teachers.

It follows the claim from the NASUWT that nearly two-thirds in Island schools are considering quitting the profession.

The DEC says the union is on a committee which examines teachers' pay.

A statement from the Department of Education and Children says salaries for teachers over here are determined by the Joint Negotiation Committee (JNC) - which comprises representatives of a number of bodies including the NUT and the NASUWT.

A rise of 2% was awarded to teachers at the start of this month in line with recommendations from the UK's School Teachers' Pay Review Body.

Education Minister Graham Cregeen has dismissed the claims made by the NASUWT, saying the number surveyed was not representative of the majority.

The DEC is now planning to conduct its own survey this autumn - covering issues like salary, training and conditions - to obtain what it says will be a 'full picture' of the situation.
