Delivery driver stole parcels he was supposed to be delivering

57-year-old caught out after dumping goods in Hospice bin

A delivery driver who stole the parcels he was supposed to be delivering to his customers has appeared in court.

Richard Vernon, of The Dhoor in Ramsey, pleaded guilty to committing theft between 1 December 2021 and 4 March 2022.

The 57-year-old was working for Evri when he took parcels containing clothing, homeware and toys of an unknown value.

He also admitted possessing criminal property, between 21 December and 24 March 2022, after checks showed he’d made more than £700 selling some of the goods on eBay.

Vernon was caught after dumping more than 150 brand new, and packaged, items in the Hospice donation bin near Rushen Abbey.

Staff who were emptying it, on 7 March 2022, removed the items and contacted police who traced the items and arrested Vernon.

He'll be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery and will next appear there on Friday (15 December); bail continues.

Update: At Douglas Courthouse on 9 February Vernon was handed a six-month custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay £500 towards prosecution costs. You can find out more HERE.
