DHA seeks 'real world' experience before changing alcohol laws

Public consultation taking place on updated licensing legislation

Feedback and ‘real world’ experience is being sought before government makes changes to alcohol and public entertainment licences.

The Department of Home Affairs says it wants to draft updated legislation which will make ‘positive practical progress’ for people who are subject to licensing.

Public sessions have been taking place across the Island which provide an opportunity for people from businesses, charities and individuals to provide their thoughts.

Yesterday the department met with representatives from the hospitality industry in Port Erin – Dan Davies is the chief executive:

Among the changes being proposed are a move away from a triennial application process – this means licences will roll if the holder continues to meet industry standards.

Changes to the types of licence available could also be introduced including those to cover ‘pop up’ licences and provide greater flexibility for events.

Justice and Home Affairs Minster Jane Poole-Wilson said: “We really want to hear comments and suggestions on what we’ve drafted so far – we need feedback and real-world scenarios to ensure that we’re getting this right.

“Once we’ve collected this information over the six-week consultation period we’ll make any final adaptations before bringing the regulations to Tynwald.

“We hope that we’ve put together initial changes that will make positive practical progress for the people who are subject to licensing and make the process more efficient for users.”

Manx Radio spoke to people working in the trade to find out what they think about what’s being proposed:

The proposed regulations are the first phase of the introduction of the Liquor Licensing and Public Entertainments Act 2021.
