39-year-old lost control of car leaving passenger trapped
A disqualified driver who crashed a car leaving his passenger trapped upside down in the vehicle will be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery.
James Marcus Doherty, of Murrays Road in Douglas, appeared at Douglas Courthouse – via live link from the Isle of Man Prison - where he was rearraigned.
The 39-year-old had previously denied driving whilst disqualified and failing to provide a breath sample and preliminary drug test at Police Headquarters, on 17 July, but changed his pleas to guilty.
The court heard Doherty was seen drinking vodka on Robert Stephen Close before getting into a Ford Focus ST, with another man, and driving away.
On the Creg Ny Baa Back Road he lost control of the vehicle and it landed on its roof in a field – Doherty was seen leaving the scene, crying, and talking on his mobile phone.
No evidence was offered on charges of taking the vehicle without consent and failing to report a road traffic accident and they were dismissed.
Doherty had previously admitted drink driving, driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance on another occasion, on Peel Road in Douglas, on 10 June.
He will be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery and is next expected to appear there on 29 September; there was no application for bail and he was remanded at the Isle of Man Prison.
