Doctors handing back Ballasalla surgery contract three months earlier than expected

Manx Care taking over from 1 May

Manx Care will take over Ballasalla Medical Centre as a salaried GP surgery at the end of this month.

Doctors there were due to hand back their contract at the end of July but will now do so three months earlier than expected.

Two interested parties have requested information about taking over at the southern facility but due to ‘timeframes’ the health body is stepping in from 1 May.

The next step of the process would usually be to launch a tender exercise but Manx Care says ‘time is not going to allow for this to take place’.

Today, at a public board meeting, it will be recommended that the board follows this ‘alternative solution’.

The meeting will take place between 9am and 12pm at the iMuseum in Douglas – for the first time it will not be livestreamed on social media. You can find out more HERE.

Manx Care says it fully expects the transition at Ballasalla Medical Centre to be ‘as seamless as possible’.

The board will also be told that GP practices on the Island are continuing to struggle for staff and ‘most of the Douglas patient lists’ are currently closed.

Manx Care has highlighted that two new GPs have been recruited at Peel Medical Centre meaning it will be up to ‘full establishment’ in the near future.

You can find the agenda for today’s meeting HERE.
