Don't be lonely at new year - call The Silver Line!

Organisers of a new advice and friendship service for older people in the Isle of Man are encouraging those feeling lonely over the new year to pick up the phone.

The party season reaches its peak on new year's eve, but for elderly people whose families have returned home after Christmas visits, it can be a sad and lonely time.

The Silver Line is a dedicated 24-hour freephone service for Manx residents.

Volunteers will be taking calls through the night on 0800 328 8888 and say the service is for anyone who'd like a friendly chat or advice on where to find practical help.

The charity's pilot project was launched in the Island by Childline founder Esther Rantzen a month ago.

She says despite the Island's strong community spirit there are probably many lonely people out there:
