Douglas man punched Covid screen after staff refused vodka sale

29-year-old pleads guilty to assault and criminal damage charges

A Douglas man has admitted damaging a Covid screen and assaulting a staff member at a Co-op branch after they refused to sell him alcohol.

Bogdan Ryzhuk of South Quay pleaded guilty to three charges at Douglas Courthouse this week.

On the evening of 8 July, Ryzhuk entered the Duke Street branch of Co-op, where he was observed by staff as being unsteady on his feet as he pushed to the front of the queue.

After pointing to a bottle of vodka and repeatedly saying 'drink', staff refused the sale, leading to the 29-year-old punching the Covid screen, which snapped and flew into nearby workers.

The store manager attempted to intervene, but was headbutted by Ryzhuk.

Pleading guilty to offences of common assault, criminal damage and threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour, Ryzhuk stated through his advocate that he didn't intend to hurt anyone, he just punched the screen to show his anger.

The case was adjourned for a probation report to be compiled, with Ryzhuk due back on court on 24 October. He remains on bail until his next appearance.
