Drink driver drove for six miles with no tyre

27-year-old caused damage to road surface

A drink driver who drove for six miles without a tyre on her front wheel has been banned from the road.

Caroline Victoria Shannon, of Douglas Head, was seen driving her Mazda along Douglas Promenade at 7.40pm on 3 September.

Sparks were coming from the wheel and the 27-year-old was swerving across the central white line; she pulled over near Regent Street and left her vehicle, insecure, in the road.

When police arrived they found the front nearside wheel devoid of any tyre – at 9pm they located Shannon in The Front Porch; she failed a roadside breath test and was arrested.

At Douglas Courthouse Shannon admitted drink driving; the court heard officers had followed the damage on the road surface back to Baldrine where they found the tyre carcass.

Shannon’s advocate described the offence as ‘out of character’ adding: “She’s been struggling significantly with personal difficulties.”

Disqualifying Shannon from driving for 18 months Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said her personal difficulties didn’t ‘explain or excuse’ what had happened.

Shannon was fined £1500 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £50; she’ll also have to pass an extended driving test.
