Drink driver stopped for McDonalds on way home

29-year-old spotted swerving by off-duty PC

A Peel man who decided to drive home from a night out drunk, after getting split up from his friends, has been banned from the road for three years.

Matthew James Quilliam, of Ballacross Road, stopped off at McDonalds before he was spotted by an off-duty police officer on 26 November.

The 29-year-old was swerving across Poortown Road just after midnight.

On-duty officers breathalysed him at his home and he was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters; tests there showed he was more than double the legal limit.

At Douglas Courthouse he admitted drink driving and having no tax for his Ford Focus.

Fining Quilliam £1600, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £125, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told him he’d made an ‘extremely foolish decision’.

“It’s clear there was significant concern about the standard of your driving,” she added.

Quilliam will remain disqualified until he’s taken and passed an extended driving test and drink drive rehabilitation course.
