Drink-driver underestimated how long alcohol would be in his system

Douglas man fined £1,300 and given 2-year driving ban

A Douglas man has been fined £1,300 and banned from the road after getting behind the wheel while over the drink-drive limit.

Adam Jones of Fairways Drive pleaded guilty after he failed a breath test earlier this month.

The court heard he'd been drinking earlier in the day, but had thought he'd be under the legal limit when he drove into Douglas at around midnight on 19 August.

Police spotted the 51-year-old driving on Victoria Street without his lights on and followed him onto Loch Promenade.

Having stopped his vehicle, officers smelt intoxicants, and asked Jones to take a roadside breath test, which indicated he was over the limit.

At Police Headquarters, he provided a further breath sample, which indicated a reading of 56 - the legal limit is 35.

His advocate told the court he was utterly ashamed of himself, and offered his apologies to the police and the courts.

Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood handed him a £1,300 fine and banned him from the road for two years, as well as ordering him to take an extended test at the end of his ban.

He'll also have to pay prosecution costs of £125.
