Drink driver who crashed into parked car was four times over limit

45-year-old will be sentenced in October

An Onchan woman who crashed her car whilst drunk will be sentenced next month.

Julie Elizabeth Norman, of Auburn Road, was travelling into Laxey on 5 August when she hit a parked car and flipped her Honda CRV onto its side.

The 45-year-old had been seen swerving, clipping the kerb, crossing the white line and driving into the hedgerow beforehand.

At Douglas Courthouse Norman admitted drink driving on Laxey Road – the court heard emergency services were called to the scene around 4.30pm.

Her vehicle had come to rest in the opposite carriageway – police found her smelling strongly of intoxicants and her eyes were glazed; she refused to do a breath test and was arrested.

After being taken to Noble’s Hospital Norman was transferred to Police Headquarters where, four hours later, she was breathalysed; she was more than three times the legal limit.

The prosecutor told the court a back-calculation was performed to determine the level of reading when she’d been driving – this showed she would have been four times the legal limit.

A social enquiry report has been requested before Norman is sentenced on 24 October; she’s been bailed until that date.
