Fine for Laxey driver who damaged parked car

38-year-old also ordered to pay compensation

A Laxey man has been fined and ordered to pay compensation to a motorist after he struck a parked car while uninsured.

John Francis Roy Stephens of the Ballacannell Estate pleaded guilty to having no insurance and driving without due care and attention after his Honda collided with a Tesla parked in the Manx Electric Railway car park in Laxey in August last year.

The 38-year-old, who's deaf, didn't hear the collision so failed to realise he'd made contact with another vehicle, leaving the scene.

However, after CCTV showed him to be the driver, he admitted responsibility for the incident.

The court heard he'd previously held insurance for his vehicle, and was unaware it had expired prior to the incident.

Describing the collision as minor and not deliberate, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood handed Stephens a £350 fine with four penalty points for driving without due care and attention, on top of a fine of £650 with six penalty points for not having insurance.

He'll also have to pay £864 in compensation to the owner of the Tesla to cover the cost of repairs, as well as £50 in prosecution costs.
