Fine for man who was seen 'lashing out' at cars

39-year-old tells court he has 'no excuse' for his behaviour

A Glen Maye man has been fined £270 after police stopped him ‘lashing out’ at cars after drinking.

Christian Wheeler, of Glen Close, admitted being drunk and disorderly during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The 39-year-old was stopped by police on Main Road, at 6.45pm on 22 October, after members of the public saw him walking in the road.

When officers spoke to him he became argumentative and was arrested; they had to use PAVA incapacitant spray, and leg restraints, due to his level of resistance.

Wheeler continued to call them derogatory names and whilst being transported to Police Headquarters freed himself from the leg restraints and began kicking the van.

During sentencing Wheeler, who represented himself, told the court: “I’m not here to defend or excuse myself in any way.”

He said he’d been frustrated at the traffic due to his ‘vulnerability’ as a road user adding: “It’s out of character but it’s done now.”

Ordering Wheeler to pay prosecution costs of £125 Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told him: “I think you’ll agree it was an absolutely disgraceful response to police.

“I hope that I don’t see you before the court again.”
