Fine for shoplifter who stole designer goods twice in two days

21-year-old ordered to pay compensation after 'unsophisticated' offences

A Douglas shoplifter who stole from two Strand Shopping Centre shops in two days has been fined £450.

Christopher Corkill, of Coronation Terrace, admitted pinching designer goods from Sports Direct and Flannels during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The 21-year-old entered the sports shop just after 4pm on 21 March – he had his hood up and was carrying an empty bag for life.

Shop staff watched as he took items from the display and put them over his shoulder before going upstairs; when he returned to the lower floor the items had gone and his bag was full.

He was then seen taking a pair of Hugo Boss jeans and a belt, worth £150, before leaving the store.

The next day Corkill went into Flannels where the shop manager described him as ‘aimlessly wandering’ around; as he left the shop the alarm sounded and she challenged him.

She recovered a Versace purse, worth £80, from his bag for life; Corkill told her: “Oh, it just fell into my bag.”

Corkill’s advocate told the court he was ‘embarrassed and ashamed’ of his actions adding he was on medication at the time: “His frame of mind is not where it should have been,” he said.

Ordering Corkill to pay £150 in compensation to Sports Direct, and prosecution costs of £50, High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told him: “I treat this as a very unsophisticated offence.”
