Former infrastructure minister wants gas exploration to follow UK regulation

Motion tabled for January sitting of Tynwald

A former infrastructure minister says searching and potentially extracting hydrocarbon from Manx waters should be done in line with UK standards.

Chris Thomas says it's for a range of reasons:

In a motion for debate by Tynwald in January, Mr Thomas is also calling for the Council of Ministers and Energy Policy Board to present its policies and standards in July.

The third part of the Douglas Central MHK's motion says the Economic Strategy Board and Council of Ministers will take 'full public stewardship' of the Island's hydrocarbon resources.

He wants the Economic Strategy Fund to be used to improve the seismic data available.

In November's Tynwald sitting, Chris Thomas and Chief Minister Alfred Cannan clashed over the plans to drill for gas.
