Funding Nautical Museum revamp needs "careful consideration"

Treasury responds to MNH comments

Treasury says any extra capital expenditure needs to be "carefully considered against other public spending requirements".

The statement comes after the Director of Manx National Heritage called on government to confirm it would spend around £3 million on plans to redevelop the Nautical Museum in Castletown.

Connie Lovell says the project will aid the government's plans to increase visitor numbers to 500,000 by 2032.

The treasury statement says with numerous cost pressures on government finances, extra spending could require ceasing other projects.

The statement in full: "Manx National Heritage plays an important role in securing and promoting the Island’s history and culture. The Treasury is aware of the significant fund raising measures being undertaken to develop new facilities including the Nautical Museum. As detailed in February’s Budget there are numerous cost pressures for Government finances at this time, requiring the use of £152 million from reserves for this financial year.

"Whilst there is a five year plan to restore a balanced budget, any extra capital expenditure will need to be carefully considered against other public spending requirements and may require reprioritising existing spending or ceasing other projects."
