'Inaccurate figures' used to calculate BMC power limitation

Treasury says work is underway to recalculate the restriction

The power limitation currently imposed on the Ben-my-Chree needs to be recalculated because the wrong data was previously used.

The vessel has had to be restricted to 48% of its engine power in order to meet energy efficiency requirements.

However, Treasury has now confirmed inaccurate figures were included in the preliminary calculation, which are likely to have been significantly more favourable to the vessel.

It's understood the Ben may need permanent efficiency improvements in order to meet the necessary standard.

Treasury, which owns the Steam Packet Company, says a temporary certification for the vessel will need to be extended by a month while the recalculation is completed.

Meanwhile, the ferry operator has been given permission to exceed its current power limitation, which it states is not the same as a speed restriction, while manoeuvring in port as the restrictions make it challenging while berthing in Douglas harbour.
