IoM looks into UK employment status

Proposals criticised by Unite

The Isle of Man would follow the same principles as the UK over any change in employment status - so says the Manx Industrial Relations Service.

This week the Taylor Review was published, recommending the UK government introduce a new category of 'dependent contractor', affording some new labour rights for those in short-term work.

This proposal is criticised by the Island's Unite representative, Eric Holmes, as inadequate and open to continued exploitation by employers.

Industrial Relations Officer, Julie Bradley, says anyone concerned about their status can have it confirmed through an employment tribunal - she told Manx Radio defining short-term work can be a grey area:
