Dig for Guckley!

Trowel meets earth in the west of the Island today (2 Jul) as a team of archaeologists start excavation work on what they hope to be a prehistoric burial mound.

A team of locals and university students, led by Dr Rachel Crellin, and Dr Chris Fowler, will start digging one of three mounds found at Cronk Guckley, just out of Kirk Michael.

Funded by Manx National Heritage and Newcastle University, the dig is part of an ongoing project launched last year to investigate some of the Island's 160 Bronze Age burial mounds.

Dr Crellin, who's from the Island, says although prehistoric finds may not be as glamorous as those from other periods, they're just as exciting
