'Low level' drug dealer spared jail despite supplying for two years

Deemster tells 50-year-old he 'should know better'

A ‘low level’ drug dealer from Douglas who supplied cannabis to people in Pulrose for more than two years has avoided being sent to prison.

Warren Jason Cain, of Hazel Close, was told he ‘should know better’ by the deemster who sentenced him at Douglas Courthouse.

The 50-year-old had previously admitted being concerned in the supply of the Class B drug between March 2020 and October 2022 and possessing it with intent to supply.

“He wishes to put this matter behind him, your honour, and I urge you to give him that opportunity.” – Jim Travers (Advocate)

Police searched his home, on 20 October last year, and found 18 grams of cannabis which had a street value of £364; they also recovered £2,385 in cash, a ledger and multiple phones.

Hundreds of pages of data were downloaded from them showing Cain had been regularly supplying cannabis; the court heard he’d also been in contact with known drug dealers.

In interview Cain told officers he wasn’t being paid to supply cannabis but did provide it to a known group of ‘trusted individuals’ in the area.

During sentencing Cain’s advocate told the court he now accepted ‘he’d been dealing drugs’ adding: “He is remorseful for his behaviour.”

Cain, the court heard, was now prescribed cannabis medicinally with the advocate adding: “That has steered him away from nefarious criminal activity.

“He wishes to put this kind of conduct behind him.”

Imposing a 20-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years, Deemster Graeme Cook told Cain: “You were essentially a low-level dealer. I will put this down to a massive mistake by you.”
