Man ordered to pay compensation for high school break-in

Criminal damage charge admitted

A Douglas man’s been ordered to pay compensation for his part in breaking into a high school last year.

William David Gilardoni of Peveril Road appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He’d previously admitted a charge of criminal damage, along with a teenage boy, who can’t be named for legal reasons.

Prosecution advocate James Robinson told the hearing police were called to St Ninian’s High School on 22 September after a burglar alarm sounded.

CCTV showed 20-year-old Gilardoni and the boy climbing over a fence before getting into the school building through an open window.

Once inside, they used tools hanging in a classroom to damage a locked door, causing £350 in damage.

Gilardoni’s advocate said his client had a difficult childhood and on the night of the incident he’d planned to sleep in the building after an argument at home.

Magistrates ordered him to carry out 40 hours community service and put him under the supervision of the probation service for six months, as well as ordering him to pay £150 compensation for the damage he’d done.

His teenaged co-defendant was handed a six-month conditional discharge and warned not go getting into further trouble.
