Manx Care issues appeal as cases of Norovirus on the rise

The highly contagious infection is spread easily on contact, says health body

Cases of Norovirus, known as the Winter vomiting bug, are on the rise in the Island.

Manx Care is urging anyone who has vomiting or diarrhoea, or has recently recovered from it, to avoid visiting patients in hospitals or residents in care homes, until they have been free from symptoms for at least 48 hours.

Manx Care is asking that all visitors observe infection control such as hand hygiene.

This includes regularly washing with soap and water and the use of alcohol hand gels at the entrances to health care facilities.

Norovirus is a particularly unpleasant condition, though for most people the illness is severe for only 12 to 24 hours.

Hospital admission is very rarely required, though people who already have other illnesses can be more severely affected.

Along with regular hand washing the cleaning of surfaces in toilets and bathrooms with the right detergents is recommended. Products containing bleach will destroy the virus on hard surfaces.
