Manx charities and services assist with post-Christmas debt

Increase in people seeking support from Manx Credit Union


A number of charities and services on the Island say they're either anticipating, or already seeing, an increase in people seeking help with post-Christmas debt.

It comes as the UK's Pensions Management Insitute, for one, says the cost of the holiday period and higher energy bills this year could see fewer people putting money towards their pension pots.

One in four Brits are also reported to have relied on credit cards to pay for Christmas.

David Talbot from the Manx Credit Union says they've seen increased footfall in the last few weeks:

David Gawne from the Council of Voluntary Organisations says people have found themselves in debt because of the added pressure of higher interest rates and the cost of living crisis:

Meanwhile, the Office of Fair Trading says it's seeing a 'steady' stream of people seeking debt advice after the festive period.

Senior trading standards officer, David Oldfield, told Manx Radio the authority has, particularly, seen an increase in creditors chasing repayments to be made.
