Marine Drive designated Area of Special Scientific Interest

Extra protection for scenic east coast route

A three mile stretch along Marine Drive has been designated as an Area of Special Scientific Interest.

The route, along the east coast of the Island with it's steep cliffs and grassland, is a popular spot with numerous species including peregrine falcons, raven, chough and fulmar.

Being marked as an ASSI means the area will be granted an extra layer of protection, with permission required for any future developments.

This location, between Douglas Head Lighthouse and Port Soderick, is the 23rd site on the Island to be designated as such.

It connects and overlaps with the Little Ness Marine Nature Reserve, includes areas of privately owned land as well as land owned by Manx National Heritage and the Department of Infrastructure.
