Members of Tynwald travel to Malta for conference

Conference theme is 'Resilient Women: Moulding Girls into Strong Women'

Three members of Tynwald have left the Island this week to attend the 10th British Islands and Mediterranean Region Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Conference.

It's being held in Malta until Saturday (9 March), and its main theme is 'Resilient Women: Moulding Girls into Strong Women'.

The delegation of MHKs Daphne Caine, Ann Corlett and Sarah Maltby have been accompanied on the trip by Deputy Clerk of Tynwald, Jo Corkish.

They will be taking part in sessions on:

  • Issues and challenges affecting Women across the Commonwealth, identifying global challenges, such as violence against women and girls, lack of women in leadership and the backlash against gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Women under pressure: the impact of the cost-of-living crisis and cultural and societal inequality and discrimination
  • Challenges of being a Woman Member of Parliament

The Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians is the network of women members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

It aims to build the capacity of women elected to parliament to be more effective in their roles and improve the awareness and ability of parliamentarians, male and female, to include a gender perspective in all aspects of their role, including legislation, oversight and representation.

It also aims to help parliaments to become gender-sensitive institutions.

The Isle of Man is part of the British Islands and Mediterranean Region (BIMR) Branch.
