MHK wants affordable internet access for those under financial pressure

It's a problem he realised during the first lockdown

A southern MHK is calling for an affordable internet tariff on the Isle of Man.

Jason Moorhouse intends to put forward a motion to Tynwald today (16 April) calling on the Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority (CURA) to implement measures which would help those under financial constraints to access the internet. This should recognise:

  • that ‘essential activity’ means activities that an average internet user would be likely to carry out in order to remain engaged in society and social services;
  • that preference should be given to the development of a cost-neutral solution, whereby the reasonable costs to relevant telecommunications providers are recovered;
  • that proposed measures should both recognise and align with public policy with regards to digital inclusion and the National Broadband Plan;
  • that the potential impacts on all stakeholders should be considered, with a view to minimising any likely impact that such a solution may have on the market; and
  • that the latest developments in terms of the voluntary offering of social tariff

The Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK would like to see a cost-neutral solution that would align with policy on digital inclusion and the National Broadband Plan.

He believes it's essential that people are able to communicate and use devices to gain information if needed.

Mr Moorhouse told Manx Radio it's something that was brought to his attention during the first lockdown:
