More than 1100 children benefit from holiday hunger scheme

But programme won't be back for 2022

More than 1100 children benefited from a scheme designed to avoid kids going hungry during the 2022 summer holidays but there are no plans to run it again this year.

The Summer Holiday Activity and Food Programme was a pilot funded by the Cabinet Office, via the soft drinks levy, to the tune of £55,059.

Those funds were issued to third sector providers and Youth Service to run the programme for 1143 children.

Education Minister Julie Edge says no funding has been allocated for the programme this year and her department are not in the position to continue this scheme or any other scheme without any further funding being allocated.

It will, however, be considered when compiling the Departments budget for the 2024/25 financial year, she says.

Miss Edge's answer has been given in response to a Tynwald Question for Written Answer from Rushen MHK Juan Watterson, who asked: How many children benefitted from the 2022 Summer Holiday Activity and Food

Programme; what the overall cost was; whether the needs that gave rise to the scheme are still present; and what plans there are to replicate or enhance this scheme for 2023.
