Move to widen pensions funding debate

Motion calls for strategy to be fleshed-out

A move to widen the debate on funding the pensions of government staff will be made in the House of Keys next week.

Former Policy and Reform Minister Chris Robertshaw has tabled a motion, calling for more details on the financial strategy designed by ministers to bridge the funding gap.

At present, tens of millions of pounds is being taken each year from the public sector pension reserve - but the fund will dry up by the end of the next parliament.

Mr Robertshaw says the government should not rely on economic growth to solve the issue - without explaining how it can be achieved. 

And he says the impact on public services for the whole population if the growth target isn't met, needs to be discussed.
