New Balthane junction plans to go on display

Changes to original proposals made following public feedback

Residents will get the chance next week to view plans to change the layout of a busy junction in the south of the Island.

The Department of Infrastructure has unveiled revised proposals for a new roundabout and junction at Balthane in Ballasalla.

If approved, a new bypass would be created linking Balthane Corner with Glashen Hill and the new Reayrt Mie housing estate.

A shared cycle and pedestrian path would run parallel to the bypass through the Reayrt Mie development.

Meanwhile, the footpath on the landward side of the Balthane junction would be lowered to improve access to all users including those with reduced mobility.

A pedestrian and cycle crossing would be installed from the roundabout to the rail crossing on one side and on the A5 main road south of the roundabout.

The plans will go on display at Malew Parish Commissioners office in Ballasalla from Monday, 24 January to Wednesday, 26 January.

Highways officials will attend between 2pm and 6.30pm on the Wednesday to answer questions from residents about the plans.

The DOI says it intends to put forward a formal planning request following consultation.

Subject to permission and funding, it's hoped work on the scheme would start in early 2023.
