New Tynwald role to be created

Recruitment begins for scrutiny position

Government will face a 'further degree of scrutiny' once a Tynwald Commissioner for Administration is appointed.

So says Policy and Reform Minister Chris Thomas, who has confirmed a recruitment process will now begin to ensure the role is in place by the end of the year.

The post would be held by a fully independent, non-governmental official - who would resolve complaints about the delivery of public services and have the power to investigate alleged maladministration.

Mr Thomas told Tynwald only complaints which arise from 31 December this year will be considered, and admitted it was hard to gauge how much demand there will be - stressing the remit should also allow complaints against local authorities to be investigated.

The Chief Secretary's Office will fund the post for the first 12 months, Mr Thomas added.
