No roaming reduction for Island

Manx users left out of EU ban

The Chief Minister says negotiations are ongoing to reduce roaming charges for Manx mobile users.

It comes ahead of an EU-wide blanket ban on the fees coming into force this Thursday (15 June).

As a non-member state, Island subscribers will still be liable to pay while using their phones abroad.

But many European networks - including Vodafone, EE and O2 - will allow theirs to roam for free when they're in the Isle of Man.

Speaking in the House of Keys this morning, Howard Quayle told members the Island's two operators were effectively at the mercy of bigger carriers:
