Plea for public to report fish poachers

Salmon and sea trout under threat

As the Island's river fisheries close until next spring, the public are being asked to be alert and report on any poaching activity.

The Department of Environment Food and Agriculture has issued the message as salmon and sea trout seek the safety of Manx rivers to spawn over the winter.

A migratory 'fish protection zone' also extends 750 meters out from the high water mark between the Stack at the northern point of Peel Bay, clockwise round the Island's coast to the northern side of Ramsey Harbour.

Karen Galtress is Inland Fisheries Manager at DEFA - she says illegal fishing during the colder months can decimate some fish populations:

BA: If you spot anyone taking fish out from rivers you're being urged to alert DEFA on 685857 or contact the police.
