Police Detention Bill on Keys fast-track

Island aims to overturn UK decision

A Bill which says time spent on police bail shouldn't be taken into account when calculating the 96 hours that police are allowed to detain a person, has now been fast tracked through the House of Keys.

Prior to 2011, the police had accepted that the so called "detention clock" stopped if someone was given police bail.

But that was overturned by the "Paul Hookway" decision given by a Manchester District Judge.

This Manx Bill seeks to overturn that decision.

Policy Minister Chris Thomas is steering the legislation through.
