The local authority agreed it needs to keep a balance with residential properties

Port Erin Commissioners met last night to discuss some special projects and tourist accommodation planning applications.

A letter was received from a resident who was disappointed with the amount of planning applications for tourist accommodation in the village.

Commissioner Hannah Mackenzie said there’s a ‘huge amount’ of properties that are only used for half of the year in the village, and said it could become ‘dormant’ if there are too many.

She also added that she will continue to vote against tourist accommodation and change of use applications at meetings.

Ms Mackenzie said the board needs to ‘think about’ the community it represents.

Barbara Guy said a balance needed to be struck between holiday houses and residential accommodation, because Port Erin is a tourist destination.

Chair Godfrey Egee said whatever decision they come to can still be ‘overruled’ by the planning committee.

The board resolved to ‘seriously scrutinise’ applications that come through which are tourist accommodation or similar.

An update was also provided on the Cosy Nook Café which is now open and operated by Foraging Vintners and Noa Bakery.

The clerk confirmed that electricals and toilets inside are complete, and a room inside used for washing up has been finished.

Mr Roberts said there had been a problem with installing a specific marquee, so the previous one is being used until a resolution is found.

He also confirmed the festoon light timers on the promenade need to be changed because the clocks went forward at the end of last month, and this will be done in due course with Manx Utilities.

A group of Morris Dancers submitted a request to perform in the village in July.

The group called ‘Mersey Morris’ wrote that they will be accompanied by live music and would like to perform at various locations.

It’s also looking to perform and support local initiatives around heritage and folklore.

The board agreed to support this request.
