Prisoners 'routinely afforded' access to psychiatric assessment says Manx Care

Health body responds to concerns raised by advocate

Manx Care says inmates at the Isle of Man Prison are ‘routinely afforded’ access to psychiatric assessment, and treatment, through a ‘dedicated, experienced’ registered mental health nurse.

It’s after concerns were raised at Douglas Courthouse this week that a defendant was being held at the facility because ‘there is nowhere else for him to go’.

The man’s advocate encouraged the deputy high bailiff to write to Manx Care to try and speed up a psychiatric assessment saying the individual couldn’t be released to Manannan Court without it.

The legal professional claimed that despite his client being on segregation, and having mental health diagnoses, he hadn’t been seen by a psychiatrist since early September.

In response Manx Care says a senior psychiatrist undertakes a clinic on a weekly basis adding the frequency of review is determined on an individual’s clinical presentation which is regularly assessed by the nurse.

It adds in cases where clinical professionals assess that admission to a psychiatric in-patient ward is necessary there is a ‘well-established clinical and legal pathway to facilitate admission’.
